Alternative Energy
The use of alternative energy sources can improve both the quality of the environment we live in and the air we breathe.
There are many different types of alternative or renewable energy sources and many of these are listed below:
- Solar Energy
- Wind Energy
- Geothermal Energy
- Tidal/Wave Energy
A more widespread use of these alternative/renewable energy sources is advisable as the world is subject to higher energy demands as a result of economic development and an increase in population growth.
How Do We Harness Alternative Energy?
Alternative energy (often referred to as renewable energy) can be harnessed in a variety of ways including through the use of solar panels and wind turbines. As these technologies become increasingly efficient, they are an economically viable alternative to technologies that use fossil fuel alternatives to provide a source of electricity.
The use of fossil fuels (such as oil, coal and gas) over alternative energy sources (such as solar, wind and geothermal) results in the ever decreasing levels of the earth's fossil fuel reserves and an increase in pollution that contributes to environmental damage, air pollution and as some scientists believe; global warming.
As the earth's reserves of fossil fuels reduce, prices will rise and conflict is likely to occur over access to such fuel sources. This is a key reason why we should all become less dependent on fossil fuel sources and become more dependent on the ways in which we can harness and use the renewable energy sources that are available to all and will never run out.
How Can Alternative Energy Be Used?
Once harnessed, renewable energy can be used in a variety of ways.
The most common way for alternative energy to be used is to produce electricity and/or heating/hot water for our homes. Households across the globe have begun to see the benefits of producing their own electricity to become less dependent on energy supplies whilst helping to reduce or even eliminate energy bills in some cases. Some people have even being able to sell excess electricity back to their national grid to provide a steady source of income that should one day eventually pay for the initial cost of their chosen renewable energy system.
Alternative energy sources are also being increasingly used to provide a source of electricity to remote communities. Alternative energy technologies are the ideal solution to providing electricity for remote communities that will likely never have power cables brought to their location.
In the future we are likely to see a significant increase in the use of alternative energy sources in many parts of the world. We are already beginning to see mass development of renewable energy systems in wealthier countries. A huge industry has evolved around research into alternative fuels that may be able to power our future and we have also begun to see more renewable energy consulting services being brought to market in order to advise and guide customers through the process of an alternative energy installation.
