Concerns surrounding carbon dioxide emissions have led to the construction of a new coal power plant in Georgia (US) to be blocked.
A court ruling which recognises CO2 as a pollutant has been used for the first time in an attempt to stop the construction of an industrial based plant.
Environmentalists are pleased with the announcement, and hope this may lead to similar decisions been made throughout the United States.
Dynegy received the go ahead in the form of a permit from the Department of Natural Resources to begin construction of their Longleaf coal plant in Georgia earlier this year.
The court ruling means the construction of the 12,000MW power station will be halted, with the judge ruling that the original permit should have contained limits on carbon emissions.
